Course description
This specialist training course aims to update and increase participants’ understanding of the epilepsies and provide a purposeful insight into what it feels like to have seizures. Participants will learn how to support people during and after seizures, better identify all types of seizures and understand when seizures are a medical emergency. The course will also teach the safe administration of buccal midazolam, enable the service to create safe emergency protocols and empower and engage people with epilepsy and their families and carers in maximizing the available local and national NHS epilepsy services.

Learning outcomes

  • Dispel myths and misconceptions about the epilepsies

  • Describe the main causes of the epilepsies and the common triggers of seizures List key recommendations from NHS best practice epilepsy guidance

  • Understand how vulnerable adults can maximize the clinical expertise locally and nationally for their epilepsy and seizures Understand the vulnerability to the epilepsies in adults with a learning disability

  • Discuss the different types of seizures, types of epilepsy and epilepsy syndromes

  • Describe the range of NHS treatments for the epilepsies

  • Manage all seizures safely and with dignity

  • Describe the safeguarding properties of the Emergency Epilepsy Care Plan Administrate buccal midazolam whilst keeping the vulnerable adult to be safe, the service safe and themselves safe

  • Explain the risks / benefits of buccal midazolam Empower and engage adults with epilepsy and their families and carers
