The course will focus on supporting teachers to provide a creative and appropriate learning environment that considers children’s starting points.

It will focus on looking at the EYFS curriculum alongside the Y1 curriculum to support the full range of children’s learning, with due regard for their individual starting points. It will particularly focus on learning from the perspective of the child.

This half day workshop will focus on supporting children’s listening and attention, understanding and speaking to ensure children reach their full potential in the EYFS. The course will explore how to provide appropriate and rich learning opportunities for all children to support the development of their communication, language and literacy from their starting points.

The session will be led by Sally Atkinson (School Improvement Learning and Teaching Adviser, EYFS) and will include contributions from Kim Neilson (Early Childhood Specialist Communication, Language and Literacy).

Code: SCH/20/68 Bridging the Gap: Building on Progression in Reading and Writing from KS1 for Y3 and Y4 Teachers

Audience

Teachers in Year 3 and Year 4, Lower KS2 Leaders, NQTs & RQTs

Led by Liz Holmes (Primary English Adviser & National Literacy Trust Trainer)

This session will support Lower KS2 teachers in identifying pupils who may have significant gaps in learning from the KS1 English Programme of Study. Teachers will have the opportunity to become familiar with the key objectives for the KS1 Reading and Writing which need to be secured in order to ensure progress across Years 3 and Year 4.

Outline

The first part of the session will explore the key elements of the KS1 phonics and spelling curriculum and strategies for supporting pupils who may have gaps in their knowledge. There will also be opportunities to review how the Y3/4 spelling objectives relate to spelling knowledge from Year 2.

The second part of the session will be spent identifying the key objectives from the Y2 Reading and Writing Teacher Assessment Frameworks and understanding how these provide the foundation for reading and writing in lower KS2. Practical strategies for supporting pupils who may have gaps in their knowledge will be shared and discussed.

Description

This session will help practitioners identify and secure the key elements of Communication, Language and Literacy in order to ensure pupils make the best possible progress on entry to Reception.

Outline
The first part of the session will be spent understanding what we mean by “phonological awareness” and the developmental stages involved. Guidance on identifying and addressing gaps in these developmental stages will be shared. During the second part of the session, the role of phonological awareness in supporting reading, spelling and language development will be explored.
